COPY EDITING

What I’ll do for you:

  • Through comments on the manuscript (using Track Changes), I give your manuscript a thorough grammar check, as well as checking for spelling and typographical errors, incorrect word use, capitalization, punctuation, clarity, sentence structure, redundancies and/or inconsistencies, consistent point of view and consistent verb tense.
  • Note that this is NOT a manuscript evaluation, nor developmental editing. The sole focus is the mechanics of the writing.

I can work with you on:

  • Manuscripts: picture books (fiction or nonfiction), chapter books, middle grade fiction, young adult fiction, to adult fiction; blog posts and web content; and some academic papers and books (excluding manuscripts that use technical, mathematical, scientific or medical terminology, equations or charts).
  • Query Packages: query letters; fiction submission packages including cover letter, synopsis, and sample pages.

I can work in the following formats:

  • Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, PDF.

What does this cost?

  • The rate for regular copy editing is a per-page rate, based on the industry standard which considers a page to be 250 words, double-spaced, in Times New Roman format.
  • Send me your word count, I’ll calculate how many pages it is and send you a quote.
  • The current rate is $6.50 per page in Canadian funds (PayPal does the currency conversion), with a minimum charge of $40.00. If you want to get a general idea of what the cost to you will be, expressed in your currency, you can use a website such as xe.com or similar.

PROOFREADING

About proofreading:

  • Proofreading isn’t just simplified copy editing. It is a very important step in the process of publishing, and for those who are self/independently publishing, it is a crucial step.
  • It is literally, the reading of the “proof” — the copy of the book that you see just before it is published. The proofreader makes one last pass over the entire work to ensure that no errors have crept in during the typesetting process. You want your reader’s focus to be on your story, not on the errors they find on the page.

What I offer:

Stage 1 Proofreading:

  • A thorough reading of the entire proof of the manuscript, as it is set up ready to print. This is usually in Word or PDF format. It is best if I have the original manuscript as well so that I can compare the two.

I will check for

  • typographical errors
  • formatting errors and irregularities (“widow” lines at the end of a page, etc.)
  • awkward end-of-line word divisions
  • alignment, line length, spacing
  • consistent font size and style
  • checking against the original manuscript to ensure there have been no omissions

Note that this is NOT copy editing and will not include reading for clarity, sentence structure, grammar, point of view and the like. This should all have been dealt with prior to the proof stage.

Stage 2 Proofreading:

  • If the client wishes, I can do a second proof read after the corrections have been made. This will focus solely on ensuring that the changes have been made and that the corrections have not created any new problems with spacing, pagination, and the like.

What you receive:

  • Comments in the margin of the manuscript using the track changes feature in Microsoft Word OR notes on the PDF.

You also receive:

  • One round of clarification questions following the return of your proofread document. This is optional and you initiate it.
  • This question and answer session will be conducted by email, preferably with the questions sent as a Word or Pages document which I can then annotate with my answers.
  • There is no extra charge for this one round of questions.

What does this cost?

  • The regular rate is a per-page rate, based on the industry standard which considers a page to be 250 words, double-spaced, in Times New Roman format.
  • The current rate for Stage 1 Proofreading is $4.50 per page, with a minimum charge of $25.00. The current rate for Stage 2 Proofreading is $3.50 per page, with a minimum charge of $20.00. These rates are in Canadian dollars. If you want to get a general idea of what the cost to you will be, expressed in your currency, you can use a website such as xe.com or similar.

When you request my services, please let me know the word-count of your manuscript so that I can calculate the page count based on the above standard. Quoting a page count that is in some other font or spacing will not give an accurate picture of the scope of the project.

DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING

What I’ll do for you:

  • Through an in-depth overview, as well as comments on your manuscript (using Track Changes) I will consider the elements of a manuscript such as characterization, voice, point of view, plot, dramatic arc, use of setting, etc. and will make suggestions to help you develop your manuscript further, so that you can make your manuscript the best it can be.

I can work with you on:

  • Manuscripts: picture books (fiction or nonfiction), chapter books, and middle grade fiction.
  • Query Packages: query letters; fiction submission packages including cover letter, synopsis, and sample pages.

I can work in the following formats:

ONE-TO-ONE CONSULTATIONS

What I’ll do for you:

  • If you are just starting out in a new genre of children’s writing (or in writing itself) and have questions about your project; if you have questions about your manuscript but you’re not ready for a full developmental edit (you just want to bounce some ideas around); if you have questions about the writing or submission process in general — I will do my best to answer them and find resources to help you learn more.

I can work with you on:

  • Manuscripts: picture books (fiction or nonfiction), chapter books, and middle grade fiction.
  • General: questions relating to the writing and submission process for children’s literature.

I can work in the following formats:

  • I prefer to do the initial consultation through written questions which I will answer in a written format.
  • We can then do a half-hour Skype session if you want to talk further, or if you prefer the written format, you may submit questions for me to answer (to take no more than one half hour of my time.)

What does this cost?

  • The rate for a picture book consultation is a flat rate of $80.00. The rate for a general consultation is $125.00. A novel consultation is $175.00. All these rates are in Canadian dollars. CLIENT PRIVACY, SECURITY, CONFIDENTIALITY

All documents are treated in a confidential manner. No work will be given to a third party, nor will I mention any part of your work to anyone else. I do not share names of clients with anyone, except where you have specifically granted permission, such as for a testimonial on this website. Your manuscript and your ideas are safe with me. I will not make use of them in any way except to provide the editing services for which you have contracted with me. I will retain your manuscript only until we have completed the editing process, including answering your questions to your satisfaction, and then will delete it from my computer. In accordance with the Federal Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (“COPPA”), I will never knowingly request or accept personally identifiable information from children under thirteen (13) years of age without parental consent.
